About the book

Robert, Anthea, Cyril and Jane are left in London with their old Nurse, who runs a boarding house, while their father reports on a war overseas and their mother recovers from illness abroad with the baby brother, the Lamb. In a shop near the British Museum, the children find the Psammead, a magical creature trapped and unable to help itself, and they buy its freedom. At its urging, they acquire half of an ancient Egyptian amulet. Though it cannot grant their wish for their family's return alone, it opens passages through time in search of its missing half.
