About the book

In a distant future, technology has nearly wiped out disease, death and unhappiness, and a benevolent artificial intelligence called the Thunderhead governs a united Earth. Because natural death no longer limits the population, a monastic order of Scythes is required to kill a set number of people each year, a duty known as gleaning. The Thunderhead leaves this task to humans. Two teenagers, Citra and Rowan, are taken on as apprentices by the respected Scythe Faraday and begin learning the moral and practical demands of taking lives.
