About the book

Resurrection follows Dmitri Nekhlyudov, a Russian nobleman who seeks redemption for a wrong he committed years earlier against Katyusha Maslova, the ward of his aunts, whom he left pregnant before she was cast out and eventually became a prostitute. Serving on a jury, he later sees her sentenced to Siberia for a murder she did not commit. Troubled in conscience, he visits her in prison, meets other inmates, and hears their stories. Through them he discovers a vast world of cruelty and injustice beneath his privileged society, which the novel uses to portray Russia across all its social levels.
