About the book
Reef is a novel set in Sri Lanka that follows Triton, a gifted young chef who has been made to leave his father's home and take a job in the household of Mr. Salgado. His employer is a marine biologist with a fixation on swamps, the movement of the sea and the vanishing reef of an island. Triton devotes himself to winning his master's approval through carefully prepared food, and he pays little attention to anything beyond the kitchen. Meanwhile, political unrest is building across the country, and the book is concerned with the unnoticed pressure it places on both men.
