About the book

Set in Victorian Britain, Fingersmith follows Sue Trinder, an orphan raised among thieves by her adoptive mother, Mrs Sucksby, in the Borough of London. A con man known as Gentleman recruits her for a scheme. She is to take a post as maid to Maud Lilly, a sheltered heiress living at the isolated country house of Briar under her strict uncle, and win Maud's trust so that Maud will marry Gentleman. Sue travels to Briar to carry out the plan, but life in the house and her bond with Maud complicate her task.
