About the book

David Lurie, a twice-divorced white professor of English in post-apartheid Cape Town, teaches communications at a technical university and feels dissatisfied with his work. His reckless pursuit of sexual affairs reaches a breaking point when he seduces one of his students, a vulnerable young woman. When the relationship comes to light, a committee judges his conduct, and he refuses to show contrition. Stripped of his position and reputation, he leaves the city for the Eastern Cape farm of his daughter Lucy, where a changing country tests him.
